About
PublicationTibbs House 50th Anniversary ProgrammeDescriptionThe Tibbs House fiftieth anniversary will be remembered as an enthusiastic and convivial gathering of Old Boys, staff, and families from across the decades. Nearly 600 participated in events on Friday and Saturday 20th — 21st July, with travellers from as far as Australia, the Cook Islands and the United States booking in.
As committee member Matt Whineray ‘82 said, “The key objective of the planning committee was getting as many Old Boys as we could reconnected - and we certainly succeeded in that.” Tibbs House current and past masters and staff also enjoyed the weekend. Mr Grant Hansen, Director of Sport and Tibbs House Senior Housemaster 2002-2007, stated, “The turnout
of ex-staff was a testament to the positive time they had as Masters at Tibbs House. And it was very satisfying to see that many of the Tibbs House Old Boys have gone onto bigger and better things. Several mentioned that the life skills they learnt at Tibbs House have enabled them to compete against the best in the business world.” A tailored schedule for the weekend, designed to leave plenty of time for socialising, included an assembly attendance, a welcome reception on the Friday evening, a pre-First XY Rugby lunch and attendance at the Grammar vs Mount Albert Grammar School match, a festive dinner in the main hall on the Saturday evening, as well as hostel tours on Friday and Saturday mornings.
A nostalgic group of Old Boys and staff attended assembly on Friday 20th July, and this was followed by guided tours of the hostel. Friday night was a great chance to catch up at the Old Boys’ Pavilion — which was a new venue for many of the attendees! Headmaster at the time, John Morris, welcomed everyone, and TJ McNamara, the hostels first Senior Housemaster, Rob Tapper, first Head Boy, and Ben Gregson, current Head Boy, spoke briefly. A great showing of foundation Old Boys was in attendance on Friday night, and also at the hostel tours on Friday and Saturday mornings. A pre-rugby lunch was another opportunity to share stories and reconnect.
Scotty Stevenson ’93 was Master of Ceremonies at the Saturday dinner, asking David Syms (Senior Housemaster 1982-85) onstage to lead roll call, and encouraging Lady Raewyn and Sir Graham Henry (Senior Housemaster 1979-81) during a Q&A session, to share some of their Tibbs House memories. For many attending, the highlight was access to the hostel. Senior Housemaster Mr Peter Morton, and matrons Joan Caughly and Valarie Summersby organised refreshments and a ‘Tibbs House Today’ presentation before prefects led groups on tours. Mr Morton remarked, “It was a pleasure to have the current boys interact with Old Boys and give an insight into boarding at Tibbs in 2013.” During planning, the organising committee recognised an opportunity to leave a fifty-year legacy for the hostel, and an auction raised a significant amount to upgrade the weights room and support hostel initiatives. There was competitive bidding for dinner at Tibbs House - a testament to how the food must have improved over the years!
Peter Morton noted that a highlight of the weekend was, “Seeing firsthand that the friendships forged in Tibbs House, however many years ago, are as strong as ever. Many of the Old Boys still keep in regular contact with each other and share fond memories of their time at Tibbs.” A post-reunion note from Tibbs House Old Boy Jon Dray echoes this: “The opportunity to catch up with people I haven’t seen in twenty years or more was invaluable... Speaking on behalf of the class of 87, the weekend rekindled our hostel spirit and reminded us what Grammar means to us.”
The Anniversary celebrations were a tremendous success, and special thanks go to Peter Morton, Matrons and the current boarders, who must be recognised for their hospitality and involvement, as well as to the organising committee, who met monthly. Tibbs Old Boys are invited to stay connected with each other and the hostel happenings through the school website, and the Tibbs House 1960s Old Boys are on Facebook and starting to plan their next gathering.
