DescriptionThe Mount Eden Quarry on School land was the crucible of hard rock climbing in New Zealand. Its steep, technical and fingery basalt grooves, as much as its urban setting remote from any mountains, were the catalyst for climbers to begin pursuing rock climbing.
Climbers came from all over the world to this unique spot in the centre of Auckland, where they could be climbing within an hour or two of touching down at the airport.
Sadly for climbers, the latest Health and Safety legislation has made it necessary to close access to this climbing spot of hexagonal columnar basalt.
